Deconstructing violence:

An Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies Through the Analysis of Popular Culture

The most engaging peace and conflict studies course EVER.

In this course you will be introduced to Peace and Conflict Studies concepts while we learn to analyse popular culture products such as your favourite movies or TV shows. You will learn some of the core questions and theories in the field, for example, how and why do violent conflicts happen? Can violence be ethical? How can people be protected from the violence of war? Does ‘Just War’ limit or justify violence?

We will look in particular at the role of narratives and discourse as a way to think critically of violence, to look at conflicts from different perspectives, and practice critical analysis skills.

Through the course, you will also be introduced to Critical Discourse Analysis, a theoretical and methodological approach that you can apply to your research, studies, or to better understand your social world.

The course is packed with engaging activities that you can do at your own pace, so that you can learn while enjoying yourself! If you love popular culture, this course will help you discover more layers of meaning that makes those stories compelling, and at the same time also enhance your understanding of how stories influence our societies in subtle ways.

At the end of the course, you will have a chance to publish your ‘Peace Critic’ analysis.

Why this course?

Through my research in peace and conflict studies I have found that narratives and storytelling are powerful tools both to justify violence and build more peace. Story help us learn as well as make sense of the world around us. As such, they are useful both for theory and learning – and in a hands on, fun way!

A few years ago I started publishing the ‘Peace Critic’ blog which was very popular, and I found that movies can be a good starting point to discuss peace and conflict concepts.

This course is an introduction to peace and conflict studies, but it can also be of interest to anyone who wants to learn how to uncover subtle layers of meanings when they watch movies and shows.

The course is suitable for all levels of studies/ research career, and all levels of digital skills. Beginners are welcome!
